What services do you believe are most important for the ACT? The establishment of a multi-disciplinary clinic to assist those suffering a range of neuromuscular disorders.
How can the ACT Government deliver current services more efficiently and productively or to better meet the needs of Canberrans? The initiative of the ACT Government in establishing the University of Canberra Hospital is to be applauded. The range of therapy programs available at the Hospital provide an ideal basis for a collaborative program with a focus on those with a neuromuscular condition. As a sufferer of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), the most common neuromuscular disorder, I understand the difficulties in seeking collective advice from the range of specialty areas needed to assist people with these types of disorders.
Are there particular services that you think the ACT Government can improve? The establishment of a multi-disciplinary clinic, where in one day someone diagnosed with any one of a number of neuromuscular issues can receive the full range of advice to guide them in their self-management of their condition, would be a significant improvement. This would reduce the impact on the health system by replacing a series of individual disconnected consultations which collectively cost the individual and community more, and often result in prolonged or inadequate treatment options, with a focused and directed solution.
What can the ACT Government do to make Canberra even more liveable?Canberrans, like any Australians, can be inflicted by any one of a number of neurological disorders. These impact on ones quality of life and the overall cost of supporting public health. Experience in other locations have shown that the establishment of multi-disciplinary clinics are the most cost effective and appropriate means to assist these people. At a relatively small cost, Canberra could show leadership in this area through its existing investment in the University of Canberra Hospital with its numerous therapy programs.
