|What services do you believe are most important for the Territory?||Local infrastructure that encourages an active and integrated lifestyle|
|How can the Government deliver current services more efficiently or in ways that better meet the needs of our community?||We need to think beyond what looks good on the map and do better planning. For example, having the light rail on one side of the thoroughfare would have saved half of the pedestrians crossing to catch transport (reducing the need to stop traffic for that half and also reducing traffic incidents). It would also keep cars closer together and out of the way. Its that kind of lateral thinking is needed in planning. It also extends itself to future development - such as dedicated bicycles ways (that are colocated - not on opposite sides of a road) and keeps them integrated - but separate. We missed the northbourne opportunity but please think of this for stages 2,3 and other transpoort development opportunities.|
We need to also think of better water runoff management. We currently do not plan to accommodate the millions of square metres of concrete that shed water into our water systems. It would be lovely to see a fee/tax on new developments per sqaure metre of concrete to pay for development of our waste water systems. This would encourage the development of better and nicer urban landscapes (also reducing hot spots etc.) reducing electricity needs.
|Are there particular services that you think the Government should stop delivering or should deliver in a different way?||The renewing of bike lanes with bumpy asphalt needs to change to smooth concrete -for cyclists - and include segregation for pedestrians and cyclists. For example, instead of replacing old bike paths with poor replacements (yes - they are not much improvement) - create new lanes specific for bikes and leave the old ones for pedestrians. It allows for a growing active city and keeps both sectors happier. For example, around lake burley griffin, make the paths bigger and better - think creative in replacement!|
|What new ideas, services or programs should the Government consider to meet emerging or evolving community needs?||In the financial sector, there are trailing commissions. They have been able to set it up so they make profits from investments based on consumer funding. I say this to demonstrate the following can be done.|
The ACT Government should look at implementing a similar scheme for housing and energy costs. Imagine a builder could receive income from a positive energy development. Conversely, they could also be charged for a negative energy development. This will create incentives for builders to actually develop significantly better housing for the community going forward. These poorly designed black houses that need to be cooled by air conditioners is not sustainable and not much cheaper than a well designed home. We need this!
